A fine and clean copy in an early fine binding of half green morocco. The spine has two raised bands, each with decorative gilt tooling. Tan title label, gilt. Gilt ruled box designs. There is an illustrated multi coloured leather onlay design to the middle of the spine showing a couple walking in the rain, under an umbrella. Blue cloth on boards. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. Previous owners colour bookplate to the front paste down. A fine copy in a fine binding. The binding is unsigned but certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

Spine with four wide raised bands, each with gilt box ruling. Compartments triple ruled and lettered in gilt. Boards with five ruled line gilt borders. Board edges and turn-ins with gilt decorative roll. All edges gilt. Yellow coated endpapers. Georges de Scudéry was a 17th-century French author who published several historical novels including 'Alaric', a story of the 5th-century King of the Visigoths. Scudery writes this work of historical fiction describing the Visigoth attack and subsequent sack of Rome in 410AD.

Published in 1654, this impressive folio edition features 10 full-page engravings and, per the title of the work, was dedicated to Christina, Queen of Sweden.
