Cunningham (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), 4 1/4 x 6 1/4 inches tall green embossed cloth hardbound, no dust jacket (as issued), gilt lettering to spine, 288 pp. Moderate to heavy soiling, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with fraying to spine caps and tips of book. Moderate to heavy foxing throughout, typical of books this vintage. Light dampstains and soiling to a number of pages. Despite these detractions, still a complete copy of this scarce mid-nineteenth century topical compilation of quotes of Jesus from Scripture, published by Catholic publisher and bookseller William J. Cunningham of Philadelphia. OCLC (No. 12119071) locates only three copies at institutions worldwide - at Notre Dame in Indiana, Saint Charles Borromeo Seminary in Wynnewood, Pennsylvania, and College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts. ~CCC~ The last published work of William Joseph Walter (1789 - 1846), a Catholic writer who published six other books and numerous essays and poetry from the time he immigrated from England to Philadelphia in 1839.
