London: N, 1749. wherein the geographical part is truly modern; and the present state of the several kingdoms of the world is so interspersed, as to render the study of geography both entertaining and instructive.... [xvi]+550+[16], 1 plate plus 21 folding maps, the title page printed in red & black, tailpiece decorations; early calf boards with double gilt rule border, lightly worn, neatly rebacked, with the original gilt ruled spine (chipped at edges) and gilt lettered maroon leather title label laid on; hinges reinforced, armorial bookplate of Henry Carington Bowles on the upper pastedown opposite the inked signature of his father, Carington Bowles (dated 1749), with two twentieth century bookplates also on the upper free endpaper, neat paper repair to closed tear from fore-edge of map opposite p. 391, the same map chipped and split at edges, scattered mainly light foxing and occasional soiling; printed for William Johnston, London, 1749. First edition. *The pagination is occasionally erratic, but the text appears to be complete. Thomas Salmon (1679-1767) was the author of numerous historical and geographical works. He travelled widely, and in 1739-40 he accompanied Anson on the latter's famous voyage round the world. Carington Bowles (1724-1793) was a London printseller and publisher. His son, Henry Carington Bowles (1763-1830) continued the family business after his father's death, in partnership with Samuel Carver. The firm of Bowles & Carver published and sold prints and maps until 1832.
