Illustrated DJ/Good; price clipped, losses to upper/lower edges; under mylar. Biography of Pennsylvania-born farmer, botanist & explorer John Bartram (1699 - 1777). Bartram's keen interest in plants lead to extensive reading, taking him beyond the farm to explore the wilderness in search of specimens. He will travel throughout to region east of the Ohio, from the Great Lakes down to St. John's River in Florida, and all the while keep in lively correspondence with botanists and horticultuarlists in Europe. His 8-acre botanic garden, Bartram's Garden in Kingsessing, just outside of Philadelphia, is one of the first true botanic collections in North America.
