About This Item
Hartford, CT: D. F. Robinson & Co., 1832. First Edition. Wraps. Very Good. 14 leaves, plus yellow wraps. With 11 hand-colored maps. Early American school atlas that depicts Texas as part of Mexico, California as an "unexplored region", Argentina as the United Provinces, Columbia as including Venezuela, Ethiopia as encompassing much of lower (Southern) Africa, and many other boundary and national curiosities. Maps are dated 1828 to 1830. Contents, listed on the front cover, include maps of the World, North America, the United States, New England, the Middle and Southern States, Ohio and Indiana, South America, Europe, Asia and Africa as well as two charts. 4to, 11.5 x 9.25 inches, 29.5 x 23.5 cm, with printing on one side of each leaf. Wraps, made of card stock, have considerable amount of soiling and a few edge chips, now nicely repaired (filled in) and stabilized. Spine reinforced with sympathetic yellow cloth. Maps have soiling as well, albeit much might be deemed simply age toning. Maps and charts are nonetheless still clearly legible, without loss, and handsome. Binding resewn and thus stable, making somewhat trivial a closed tear and crease affecting some leaves on the lower part by spine.
