About This Item

New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1990. Edited by Darlene Geis Folio size white clothbound hard cover with dust jacket; 450 pages with 410 illustrations including 227 plates and 11 maps in full color including many two page spreads and two tri-fold pull out illustrations, one a map of the Cote de Beaune on one side and the Cote de Nuits on the other side and the other Haut-Medoc and Graves on one side and Sauternes and Barsac on the other side. The dust jacket is made in an interesting style with the top and bottom ends folded over on the inside, the way you might make a book cover. In this (book) Clifton Fadiman - the illustrious critic, author, editor, and inspired anthologist - recounts his own love affair with wine; the special pleasure to be found in this remarkable elixir; how the drinking of it connects us with history, literature, and the arts; what sensations and experiences are to be discovered in a glass of wine; how to enjoy it simply and without pretentiousness and at the same time how to savor and analyze each delightful sip. He has also packed a mixed case of stories, humorous essays, poems and quotations ranging from an epigram by Horace to a piece by Russell Baker, from a Dorothy Sayers detective story featuring Lord Peter Whimsey to a vineyard romance by John La Carre - all illuminating the long connection between wine and civilization." Edgewear, small bump to bottom of front board, light soil to bottom of book and some wear and light creasing to dust jacket. We noted three creased page corners. The book opens flat between pages 182 and 183. This is a very heavy volume, weighing almost nine pounds. . Cloth. Good/Good. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.
