HB. 4to (277x196mm), orig. quarter mock vellum, vellum patterned paper to boards, raised bands, gt title to spine in cloth and paper covered card slipcase. Vg. ex libris J.R. Kirkup FRCS, with his inkstamp to front pastedown. Kirkup is a retired orthopaedic surgeon with an interest in the history of medicine.. Facsimile reprint of Leonhard Fuchs' 1543 herbal. Born in Wemding, Bavaria, in 1501, Fuchs was a physician and botanist, and a leading figure in the late German Renaissance. He is considered a founding father of modern botany and is remembered in the name of the flower and colour; fuschia. Containing over 500 botanical illustrations, the New Kreüterbuch represents a notable advance in accuracy in botanical illutrations. It also included some of the first descriptions of plant species from the new world, including maize, potatoes, and tobbacco..
