First Edition; Demy 8vo; Vol. I. pp. xxii, 333; coloured lithographed frontispiece, double page map, numerous wood-engraved plates and illustrations; Vol. II. pp. xvii, 303; engraved b/w. frontispiece, double page map, numerous wood-engraved plates and illustrations, meteorological observations, index; both volumes uniformly bound in green half leather with green cloth boards, raised bands, marbled edges and endpapers, titles lettered in gilt on spines, an associated hand written letter from the librarian of the Royal Geographic Society tipped in on front endpaper, edges a little rubbed, some spotting to first few pages of each volume, very good set. Julius Payer (1841-1915) was the leader of the Austro-Hungarian North-Polar Expedition described here; During this voyage he made the discovery of Franz Joseph Land, however upon his return to Vienna many critics voiced doubts about its existence.
