About This Item
Boston: The P.R. Warren Co. Printers, 1906. Edition not stated. Octavo (21.5cm); dark green cloth, stamped in black; 303pp. Boards worn with scuffs and small gouges, extremities chapped; patches of material bleaching on rear; interior toning to margins; first signature somewhat loosened from rest of textblock, else pages are clean and tight. Period ads throughout. Very Good.
This cookbook was offered through The Acker, Merrall & Condit Company, which is primarily known today as a wine auctioning service. However, they once provided general provisions (under the brand name "Amcehat") through a mail order service, and also operated several retail stories in the Mid-Atlantic area. As described in a 1908 issue of Good Housekeeping, this cookbook "contains many recipes for home and hostess cookery not to be found in the average volume of the kind". Featuring recipes for meats, vegetables, desserts, and a section titled "Forty Recipes from the Four-Hundred", referring to a list of New York's gilded age society elite.
