This title was first published in May of 1990. It contained the names of 88 New Mexico peace officers who died in the line of duty between 1874 and 1989. In the years from 1990 to 1996, Ten more law officers were killed as they performed their duties. Research dating back to 1847 produced the names of 32 additional officers who gave their lives to the cause of law and order. This revised 1847-1996 edition honors 129 men and one woman whose names appear on the New Mexico Law Enforcement Memorial in Santa Fe. These officers, in virtually every case, went to work one day with the thought in mind that at duty's end, home and hearth would be waiting. None of them made it At any time in a peace officer's working life, circumstances may demand that he or she face extreme danger. Each of these officers met such a challenge and died in doing so. They are New Mexico's Finest and they can best be honored by remembering how each of them died and by using that experience to prevent the on-duty deaths of other officers. Sad to say, some of these officers made mistakes: some were too trusting, some were slow to react, some used poor tactics, and yet others fell to overwhelming odds. Peace officers fortunate enough to be reading these pages are well advised to consider each circumstance and to make a personal pledge that he or she will never become a chapter in this book or a name on the monument.
