About This Item
London: J. Crowder, 1803. viii, 309 pp. Octavo. Fifteenth edition, enlarged and illustrated with copper plates. Very attractive marbled leather binding. Gilt lettering and lines in a red label on the spine. Trimmed edges. Edges somewhat dust soiled. Inscription in blue ink on the front free end paper. Previous owner's bookplate on the front paste down. Printed on mould made paper. Minimal foxing and staining inside the volume. Features a fine engraved portrait of the author as frontispiece. Illustrated with copper-engraved plates, tables, illustrations and diagrams throughout. Probably the most famous English navigational text of the time period; in the late eighteen hundreds, Moore's 'The Practical Navigator' was the text you would have consulted if you read English and were planning a maritime voyage. It also inspired Nathaniel Bowditch of Massachusetts, who improved Moore's work for American publication. The New American Practical Navigator is now considered the standard work in the history of navigation, and this volume is its honoured ancestor.

This volume was previously owned by Lieutenant Commander Andrew David of the Royal Navy. David was a prominent hydrographic specialist who served with the Hakluyt Society and the Society for Nautical Research. David's bookplate is on the front paste down. Another previous owner is believed to be author Henry Denham (1897 - 1993). There is an inscription on the front free end paper, "To Henry Denham with great gratitude for the help and pleasure his books have given me." 1803
