About This Item

New Statesman, London, 1997. Thirteen issues of New Statesman, each with a front cover color illustration and at least one interior color illustration by Ralph Steadman. "Ten years ago Britain's greatest cartoonist vowed he would not draw politicians. But you can't keep an angry man down and Steadman will be offering NS readers his unique vision each week between now and the election. Our centre spread reveals his view of the Major government." Glossy wraps, 11 x 8 1/4 inches, each 55 to 63 pp. Fine. In his introductory statement, Steadman says, ".Since 1987 I have refused to draw politicians. I turned away, leaving them to their Latex lookalikes which rendered their unspeakable antics a cosy entertainment in every living room throughout the land. Their authority is a mask of violence. They have disrupted communities, created new ones in limbo, caused unemployment by transforming economics into a weapon against the human workforce, discouraged and dismembered our welfare systems and our culture and learned to lie with eloquent ease. It is now respectable to cheat and win. Personal gain at any cost is progress and a job for life is as desperate as a back-street abortion. And by the way, I still refuse to draw politicians' faces, but I am quite happy to draw their legs. OK." 24 January, 14 February, 21 February, 28 February, 7 March, 14 March, 21 March, 27 March, 4 April, 11 April, 18 April, 25 April, and 9 May, 1997. (3214014x9.5). 1st Edition. Soft cover. Fine.
