About This Item
Denver: Colorado Associated University Press, 1974. First edition, first printing. Hardcover, in dust jacket. Faintly sunned top edge, fine in very good dust jacket with short tear and chip rear top edge, in mylar cover.. 9.25" x 10.25". 120pp. A DREAM OF THE WEST
The first thing that meets the eye is how much sky there is in each photograph, turned upside down becoming large luminous pools of light embracing rugged landforms. Colorado's Front Range, circa 1970, is a long shimmering draught of open space punctuated by swatches of growth and development. Adams' lens pulls up and back, eschews the aesthetic and reveals a field of light causing the eye to squint to see the vast distances. Nostalgia is implied, the land stretches to an infinity that suddenly dissolves into a mirage of subdivisions, bare bones breaking through, not the clouds, but the ever-present light.
