D. Hooker . and George Bentham, esq. with a sketch of the life of Dr. Vogel.]. Large octavo, pp xvi, 587, (i), with a tinted frontispiece, a plain plate of views, a map, and 50 plates of botanical line drawings (some folding) on 43 leaves, as the folding plates are double-numbered. The text is very clean, the plates are a little foxed overall, and rather age-toned on the margins. Original cloth slightly marked and very slightly worn, with a new green calf spine, retaining the original endpapers. Very firm and sound internally. From the library of the Kew botanist Nigel Hepper, and the earlier provenance of Edgar Milne-Redhead.. First Edition. Quarter leather. Good.

With title page to the 5th edition of 1876, 395 pages of text (p.363 to p.758) and 110 hand-coloured botanical engravings.Willibald Artus (1809-1880) was a pharmacist in Weimar, before moving to Jena in 1840 to become professor of chemistry and pharmacy at the university.Brown half leather binding with crack at front hinge, gilt title on spine, marble boards scuffed and worn, text pages starting to brown as usual, hand-coloured plates with some toning and occasional foxing. Edited by Michael Roe. Works issued by the Hakluyt Society, second series, volume 131. First edition.In 1794, Charles Bishop sailed from Bristol as master of the Ruby, a trading ship bound for north-west America. He had instructions to procure otter furs fro the Indians and then to proceed to Canton via japan and sell the cargo. During the years 1794-1802, he rounded South America to reach the Pacific coast, then visited the Pacific islands and the coasts of Asia and Australia. In the Moluccas, he sold the Ruby and purchased the Nautilus; correspondingly, the test is divided into two sections.
