Word of A. L. Kennedy's excellence only reached me in the U.S. with the arrival of Day, a novel about an RAF tail gunner in WWII. Although it is very fine, it is in her collections of stories, this and What Becomes, that her brilliance shines most brightly. She is curt, sarcastic, hilarious in a shy person's way. Her characters are also usually polite and unassuming. Some deal with intense pain, somehow managed. Clueless extroverts keep away. This, her first book, shows she was marvelous from word one in 1993. (A few words of Scots slang may mystify some, but only slightly.)
