"John Bazley came to Natal in 1850 as a Byrne Settler. He was the first man to pitch his tent at Richmond and soon moved to the Ifafa area where he established the sugar estate Nil Desperandum. The family encountered wild animals, cannibals and shipwrecks in their quest to tame this land. John's son William went on to open up the Umzimkulu River at Port Shepstone to shipping. Years of underwater blasting, toil and hardship saw the channel deep enough for small steamers to enter the river alongside Bazley's famous wall. This is their story." .
