NY: W. J. Widdleton, Publisher, 1863 Book. Very Good -. Hardcover. Revised Edition. Complete five volume set, bound in a dark green binding. Minor wear, foxing on endpapers, several pages uncut; dampstain on rear cover and rear endpapers of Volume 3, and on rear cover of Volume 5. This revised edition includes memoirs and notes by R. Shelton MacKenzie; the author, John Wilson was a Professor of Moral Philosophy in University of Edinburgh, etc. Contains a series of imaginary colloquies and dialogues, which first appeared in Blackwood's Magazine in the early 19th century. The scene is usually set in Ambrose's Tavern in Edinburgh, and the central characters are "Christopher North" (Wilson himself), "Timothy Tickler" (based on Robert Sym, 1750-1840, previously a Writer to the Signet), and the "Ettrick Shepherd" (based on James Hogg). Several other characters, imaginary or based on real people, including the "English Opium Eater" (Thomas de Quincey) occur in some episodes. The series is particularly noted for the expressive Scots dialogue of the Ettrick Shepherd..
