This work is an outgrowth of the author's dissertation. In examining the relations between Japan and the USSR since 1945, this study emphasizes: (1) the role played by the American-Soviet conflict in conditioning Japan's Soviet policy as well as her domestic developments; (2) the attempts made by the USSR to draw Japan into her on fold; and (3) the domestic compulsions which influenced Japan's policy toward the USSR. The author has tried to determine whether in the postwar era, Japan was just a pawn in the American-Soviet conflict or whether she did try to formulate positive policy towards the USSR on her own independent judgment.
