About This Item

London: Chapman & Hall,, 1862. First edition of Trollope's account of his travels in North America just before the American Civil War. This edition was published in May 1862, the American edition was published the following month. Trollope produced a sensitive and nuanced portrait of the American North (he did not visit the South), in contrast to his mother's much vilified Domestic Manners of the Americans published some 30 years earlier. Two volumes, octavo. Original pinkish-maroon embossed cloth, titles in gilt to spines, edges untrimmed, brown coated endpapers. Folding map of North America to vol. 1, and 32 pp. of publisher's advertisements dated October 1861 at end. Spines lightly sunned, s little wear to corners, spine ends of vol. 1 sometime restored, the bindings otherwise firm, hinges tender, internally clean and untoned; a very good set indeed. Sadleir, Trollope 14.
