First edition of Agee's first book. Slim octavo. 59 pp. Green cloth, lettered in dark green at spine. The paper is very lightly age-browned at perimeters, and the cloth is sunned a bit at spine and along the top-edge of boards, else fine. In a near-fine green dust jacket which is sunned at spine and shows light wear along the top-edge, with a few closed tears.

Hartford: Brown and Gross, 1859. Hardcover. 8vo. Original blind-embossed red cloth, gilt. x, 402pp. Very good. Mild edgewear and bit of rubbing/light soiling to binding; light even age toning throughout. Overall a tight, clean, nice third edition of this verse collection (with front board and spine gilt bright) in which Sigourney takes a Biblical line and uses it as the inspiration for a poem -- one for every day of the year, January 1st through December 31st. This particular copy was likely a prize for a school contest, for an inner flyleaf has been inscribed and signed large and bold in brown ink by the author (though recipient's name has been filled in by another hand): "Presented to / Andrew Sherratt / for excellence in Reading / with the good wishes of his friend, / L.H. Sigourney." Tight and nice first edition of this scarce and influential volume of Blake criticism, which did for interest in Blake what Raymond Weaver's biography of Herman Melville ("Herman Melville: Man, Mariner and Mystic," 1921) did a few years earlier for interest in that neglected writer. This exceptional copy bears a choice presentation inscription from the author in blue fountain pen on the front flyleaf: "To Mark Turbyfill / who is one of the very few / who should know what I / was trying to get at. / S. Foster Damon." This is one of Bukowski's best collections of poetry, written shortly after he'd "made it" with musings about his new found comfortable life in San Pedro, as well as material concerning his earlier, more troubled times in East Hollywood, Los Angeles. Some wonderfully witty writing in here with poems about mortgages and tax accountants, as well as the standard fare of race tracks, classical music, and bad sex. One of the best Bukowski poetry books from his mid-period.

Small bump to last few leaves of volume one otherwise a fine bright set. From the library of a Wedgwood family member with gift inscription dated 1908. A very nice set.

Internally very good subject to moderate browning and dustiness and a few small stains to the title page (couple mirrored on inside front cover) . Binding firm. Cover is somewhat shelfworn and a little scuffed with a small stain; the Claud Fraser design on the front cover is reasonably bright.
