About This Item
Chapel Hill: The University of North Carolina Press, 1939. Hardcover. 8vo. Maroon cloth with gilt lettering. xxxiv, 601pp. Illustrations, maps, map front endpaper, foldout map in rear pocket. Near fine. A tight and handsome first edition of this volume in the Works Projects Administration's admirable "American Guide Series" -- the Federal Writers' Project of FDR's "New Deal." Boldly signed in blue ink on the title page "Compliments of / Clyde R. Hoey Governor" (the following two leaves being a facsimile of Hoey's letter introducing this volume). Hoey (1877-1954) may have presented this copy to fellow governor Ralph L. Carr (1887-1950) of Colorado, for an inner flyleaf bears Carr's large Lincoln-theme bookplate and the front pastedown bears his inkstamped name. The color foldout map at rear is exceptionally pristine. A lovely, and unusual, copy.
