Dark brown embossed cloth boards are mottled, with some loss of material at extremities.The book was a gift dated 1857 from Mrs.Dorothea Elizabeth Cooke to her son Jay Cooke Jr. The child has drawn a naval officer on the front endpapers. Her husband was one of the most powerful figures in American history, Jay Cooke (1821-1905), lived outside Philadelphia in his Cheltenham-based "Ogontz" mansion (there is a 'Jay Cooke Ogantz' stamp on the front endpapers) and was responsible for financing the Civil War (1861-1865) for the federal governments Union forces before helping to open the West to major railroad and population expansions.He would lead to the establishment in 1872 of the worlds first national park, Yellowstone.
