Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1853. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. pp. xxiv, 349, with two maps (one folding), 10 color lithograph plates, and additional illustrations in the text. Bound in three-quarter leather and marbled boards, with marbled edges, gilt spine in six compartments with title on black label. Old repairs to joints and hinges, leather well rubbed at corners, internally sound and clean. Forbes was a Scottish scientist and traveller who investigated the theory of glaciers and went on many expeditions in the Alps. Neate F44: "Although Forbes visited Normay primarily in the course of his scientific researches into glaciers, his book was regarded as a great classic by Cecil Slingsby, the 'Father' of Norwegian mountaineering."
