Elle est très bien [l'épitre poétique d'Emile Bally], autant que j'en puis juger, moi ignorant l'allemand mais connaissant parfaitement les deux Faust par les traductions de Gérard de Nerval, de Blaze de Bury et d'un traducteur très exact, parait-il, dont le nom m'échappe en ce moment. Les vers sont bien rimés, dans le genre encore un peu classique qui sied là. En un mot vous pouvez à bon droit risquer une conférence (est-il temps encore ?)

Je vous ai-je crois, déjà parlé d'un amateur de Manchester [Richard Crowley], mort il y a quelques temps, processeur d'un grand tableau du maître Fantin-Latour, titré : Coin de table, et représentant, au dessert, autour d'une table ennuyemment garnie de vaisselles fines et de fleurs, quelques poètes fumant pour la plupart, de buste, grandeur nature.
J'y figure, en compagnie de Rimbaud, Valade, d'Hervilly et trois ou quatre autres, assis ou debout.
Le propriétaire est mort vous disais-je, et son père aurait hérité de cette œuvre qui date de 1872. Si ce monsieur existe encore, s'il est encore en possession du tableau, en cas contraire quel est l'acquéreur actuel de ce tableau ? Voilà ce qu'il m'importerait beaucoup de savoir. The third in a series of four "group portraits", Fantin-Latour's painting was originally intended to pay homage to Baudelaire in a manner similar to the one he had previously paid to Delacroix. This group portrait, now in the Musée d'Orsay, dates from the first half of 1872 and depicts the poets present at the dinners of the "Vilains Bonshommes", which Edmond Maître had presented to the painter. Paul Verlaine, Arthur Rimbaud, Léon Valade, Ernest d'Hervilly, Camille Pelletan, Pierre Elzéar, Émile Blémont and Jean Aicard are among the artists. Albert Mérat had refused to pose with Arthur Rimbaud after the incident at the dinner on 2 March 1872.

The painting was exhibited at the Salon of 1872 under the number 604. In September 1872, the work was deposited with the famous art dealer Durand-Ruel and exhibited the work in his gallery on rue Le Pelletier. The painting was then exhibited in the dealer's London gallery in November of the same year under the title "a Few Friends" (no. 22). It was at this same time that Verlaine and Rimbaud, who were staying in London, met again in the famous painting. Verlaine related it to Edmond Lepeltier in a letter dated November 1872:
" […] Nothing new here, except the presence, among other French paintings (Manet, Monet, Harpignies, Renoir, etc.) of Fantin's Table Corner. We come out of seeing each other again. It was bought 400 pounds (10,000 fr.) by a richard [Crawley] from Manchester. Fantin for ever! "

Richard Crowley bought the work from Durand-Ruel's London gallery on 16 November 1872 for the sum of 200 pounds. It remained in the family's collection until 1897.
