About This Item

Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1970 reprint of 1900 first edition. Cloth, gilt cover device, 4to, 33 cm,. ix, 16, xvi, 203 pp, ills, facs. From the blurb: "Horace Hart's Century is a display and a record of the typefaces given to the University of Oxford in the seventeenth century by Bishop John Fell and of other types and ornaments cast in old matrices preserved at the Press. In an appendix Hart prints the letters exchanged between Fell and his agent in Holland about the purchase of matrices and type. The author, Printer to the University from 1883 until 1915 printed 150 copies of his book in 1900 and gave them to people prominent in the literary world. It has not been reprinted previously. The Century has come to be regarded as a classic authority by students of typographical history. This reprint by photo-lithography is supplemented by an introduction and notes. Research done since the book was issued, particularly by the late Stanley Morison into the origins of the Fell types, is digested in the notes at the end of the book, and some revisions by Hart have been added. This edition is, therefore, an up-to-date survey of one of the world's richest collections of historic printing types. The added matter is hand-set in Fell types and printed directly from them. It includes a list of recipients of the original edition." In the original edition Hart had attempted to reproduce and represent by types in existence, by types cast for the purpose, or by "Process" blocks where no types existed, all the Types, Devices, Ornaments, etc. as shown in the "Specimens" dated or undated 1693-1794. Near Fine in dustwrapper, the top inch of the front panel of the dustwrapper being sunned.
