1832 Thomas Jefferson Notes on State Virginia SLAVERY Indians Colonial Americana

"I cannot live without books."

― Thomas Jefferson

Thomas Jefferson's 'Notes on the State of Virginia' was his written response to various questions he had been asked about Virginia by French secretary Francois Barbe-Marbois. This book is regularly considered the most important American book published before 1800 (Bernstein). This book is important for many reasons, but it gives insight to Jefferson's views on slavery, Native Americans, important laws, powers given to the people and the government, as well as how to exhaust resources reserved for the military.

This book instilled fear in many slave owners, out of fear that their 'property' would be taken from them and that an emancipation would become imminent. In addition to the more controversial topics, Jefferson discussed the geography and topography of Virginia, religious views of Colonial America, and important state-papers.

Today, "Eighteen History Outlines" is still the most read history book by Japanese people. (Chen Sunchen)
A 19th-century Sino-Japanese woodblock printing of "Eighteen Histories Outlines" bound in the fukurotoji style. An incredibly rare and impressive Elzevier printing of Thomas Smith's "Anglorum". During the first half of the 17th-century, Elzevier published numerous works on European countries designed for travel and studies (Respublica). Smith, a 16th-century English diplomat, was the Secretary of State under King Edward VI of England. He also served under Elizabeth I, and was one of her most trusted Protestant advisors. His most important books was 'De Republica Anglorum' – in which Smith described England's government style as a commonwealth. This work has become a staple in the study of the English constitution.

Description:
1682 Bible & Letters of Saint Jerome Catholic Church History Asceticism PARIS

"When the stomach is full, it is easy to talk of fasting."
– Jerome, Epistle 58

Saint Jerome was a 4th-century, early church father. While he was most known for his translation of the Bible, he also wrote a collection of letters which are now known his 'Epistles.' These letters were written on a variety of topics, but most of them were written as warnings against sin and detestable devices such as sexual immorality within the clergy, clothing advised for virgins, gluttony and fasting, and laboring over Biblical texts. These letters were written to and from important men and women of the church such as Augustine, Theophilus, Heliodorus, and the Popes.

This 1682 French edition was published in Paris by Couterot, translated by Jean Petit, and features a portrait frontispiece of Jerome.

"It is never too late to be wise."
