Unexplored Northwest Texas in 1854
[Texas] Parker, W[illiam] B[rown]. Notes Taken During the Expedition Commanded by Capt. R.B. Marcy through Unexplored Texas in the Summer and Fall of 1854. By W.B. Parker, Attached to the Expedition. Philadelphia: Hayes & Zell. 1855. First edition. Original brown ribbed cloth with publishers' logo stamped in blind on covers, title in gilt on spine. Jenkins, Basic Texas Books 135n. Graff 3195. Howes P91. Plains & Rockies IV:279. Raines, p. 162. Streeter Sale 397. Tate, The Indians of Texas: An Annotated Research Bibliography 2176. Vandale 129. William Brown Parker, a friend of Marcy's, was a New York City businessman and editor who wanted to see the West. Parker writes in an engaging style and provides information not found in other accounts of the important Marcy-Neighbors exploration of the Big Wichita and the headwaters of the Brazos to find sites in Northwest Texas for Native American Reservations. Parker devotes a good deal of his narrative to the tribes encountered and the Native American scouts who assisted the expedition, making it clear that the latter's assistance enabled the expedition. Parker praises the Shawnee and Delaware scouts: "Wherever they are found, they preserve the same character for truth, honesty, and intelligence, and are ever ready, at a moment's warning, to take service, as hunters, guides, or interpreters, and travel hundreds of miles from home." "A well written narrative [which] adds flavor to Marcy's report." – Jenkins. "Especially valuable for the northwest part of Texas." – Graff. "Contains interesting details of personal intercourse with the Indian tribes of the Southern prairies—the Bedouins of the American desert." – Sabin. "A valuable report by one of the civilians who accompanied Capt. Randolph B. Marcy and Robert S. Neighbors across northwestern Texas looking for a site upon which reservations could be created for Penateka Comanches and the small, displaced tribes of Texas." – Tate.- Bookseller Independent bookstores (US)

Munich: M. Müller & Sohn, 1919. 9x12 inch broadside, paper evenly toned, couple of short, unobtrusive closed tears at right edge, very good. A lovely example of this proclamation issued under Toller's name on behalf of the Provisional Revolutionary Central Council of the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic. Undated, but the example illustrated in "Sammlung von Flugblättern betreffend die Münchener" has a penned date of April 13, 1919. Toller had replaced Ernst Niekisch as head of the Central Council on April 8. "To the working people of Bavaria! Bavaria is a Soviet Republic! Great rumors are circulated by those who seek to harm your interests. Everything is calm in Munich. No shots were fired...." Outlines problems with the pre-existing electoral system, promises a new regime of workers' councils. "The farmer has to stand by his plow, the blacksmith by his anvil... All mistrust is misunderstanding! Therefore be united in the Soviet Republic of Bavaria!

Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo and Co, 1852. 8vo. (9 x 5 7/8 inches). 63pp., plus 24pp. of ads in the rear and 4pp. of ads tipped in at the front. Original printed wrappers. Provenance: President Millard C. Fillmore (presentation inscription on the upper wrapper, "President Fillmore, with respects of the Author") Second edition, inscribed to President Millard Fillmore. This address given by Henry Augustus Boardman, pastor of the Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia and prolific author, denounces the policy of political intervention proposed by deposed Hungarian leader Lajos Kossuth in his speech before Congress. Kossuth, who was briefly President-Regent of Hungary, fled the country in 1851 after the collapse of his power-base. Considered a revolutionary, he was feted across England and America and addressed the Congress, exhorting them to intervene in the quarrels of foreign countries to support democracy and freedom. Boardman is highly critical of this idea. This copy is inscribed on the…
