Amsterdam: Paul Marret, 1695. Later edition in French (first published in Paris, 1676; the work first published in English in London, 1648). 12mo. 2 volumes bound as one: (24), 200, 178; (14), 318 pp. Extra engraved title pages to each volume, 16 folding maps and plates. Sabin 26304. Hill 665 (for the 1648 edition): "[1625 to 1637] Gage spent in Central America, Mexico, Guatemala, Nicaragua, and Panama. He lived for some years among the Indians, and, on occasion, acted as parish priest or professor of philosophy. His book, published after his return, caused a great sensation, for it was the first to give the world a description of the vast regions from which all foreigners had been jealously excluded by the Spanish authorities. The work was translated into French, Dutch, and German, but its purpose was to urge the English to seize the Spanish territories in the New World." Near contemporary calf (rubbed), spine with elaborate blind-stamped decoration, vellum spine label, all edges sprinkled red. Very good. (1361).

Translated from the Italian manuscripts by Nicoles Garcia de San Vincente. The Palou volume is essential reading for the early history of Northern California.
