Philosophy compendium that presents logics according to the Aristotelian categories and it falls within the framework of the effort to renovate the compendia of Coimbra (that had been published between 1592 and 1606) in the 18th century by priests of the Society of Jesus like Gregório Barreto or António Cordeiro.

The author (Cantanhede, 1669 - Évora, 14-01-1729) joined the Society of Jesus on the 22nd of January 1685 in Coimbra where he studied philosophy and theology between 1688 and 1701 at the University, where he later was teacher of those same subjects. He also taught rhetoric in Santo Antão and S. Roque in Lisbon, as well as in The University of Évora. He was qualifier of the Holy Office, judge at the court of appeal of Lisbon’s Patriarch, his confessor and also of the Prince D. António. He wrote poetry in Latin and left many handwritten works on philosophy, which may now be found at the University of Coimbra and the National Library of Portugal.

About Livraria Castro e SIlva

Founded in 1957, by Ezequiel Castro e Silva, LIVRARIA CASTRO E SILVA is a bibliographic commercial organization, well known in the antique book market and amongst the antiquarian booksellers, both in Portugal and abroad, for being one of the most distinguished Portuguese specialists in its area, dealing in books through several continents. We seek to maintain a family tradition that goes back to the second decade of the last century. Our main activity is the edition and periodic publication of bibliographic catalogues.

Aiming to provide faster access to our catalogues, better stock information and improving communication with our clients, in 2003 we launched our website www.castroesilva.com, allowing all interested parts an easier access to registration and order of our catalogues. This webpage has a bibliographical database which seeks to replace the old file system, in itself an historical and probably unique tool, while allowing us the means to spread information about our books and contributing to the general bibliographical research.

We are convinced that personal contact should always be privileged so all interested parts can visit us at our shop, where those seeking rare, antique books, for collecting or studying can find and examine them in the private quiet environment such activity requires.
