About This Item

Hartford: W. S. Williams & Co, 1865. One-Half Cloth. Very Good-. Though noticeably foxed at preliminaries and bearing a prior owner's name at the front free endpaper, this copy is otherwise notably clean, the front hinge starting but the binding overall secure; the hard cover, one half blue cloth with marbled paper boards, shows heavy scuffing to the boards with exposure along foreedges, wear to the fabric along edges and around corners, and scratches to the leather title plate on the spine, but remains overall sturdy. 384pp. Sensational in its time, problematic now, but a fascinating tale of cross-dressing for adventure in a grim time.

Synopsis

Ms. Edmonds writes about the numerous battles she participated in, including Bull Run, Williamsburg, Antietam and Fredericksburg. To send the book over an infrared connection, click Beam. To send the book to a computer on the network, enter the computer name in the Send To box and click Send. You can either lend the book or give it away. Like a paper book, there is only ever one working copy. Once the lending period expires, you get your rights back and you can re-read the book or lend it again. Of course, if you give it away, it's gone for good (unless the recipient gives it back).

Reviews

On Oct 27 2020, a reader said:
I purchased this book at the Printers Row Litfest in 2019. This book, which was published in 1865, the last year of the Civil War, concerns a woman from Canada who fled to the U.S. to escape an arranged marriage and then enlisted in the Union Army, dressed as a man and using a male name as an alias. She got away with her deception and she actually took part in the fighting, as well as acting as an Army nurse (despite the fact that she had no training of any kind) and she also acted as a spy, dyeing her skin to look like an African American. I have read many books on the Civil War, including first person accounts, but I have never read another one like this. I recommend the book to anyone who likes to read about the Civil War.
