About This Item

Hartford, Philadelphia, Cincinnati, Chicago: W.S. Williams & Co.; Jones Bros. & Co.; J.A. Stoddard & Co., 1865. While many disguised women served during the American Civil War, this is one of the few well-documented stories. A Canadian, Emma Edmonds eventually became the only woman member of the Grand Army of the Republic. Her memoir was originally published in 1864; this is a Good only copy of the reprint, issued under a different title by a different publisher, which became a best-seller of the time. Green cloth binding, decoratively stamped, with gilt lettering on the spine. Clean text; 384 pages. There are nine "embellishments," including a frontis portrait of the author. This copy is in rather delicate condition, with bumping, fraying, and with both gutters cracked. Please note the condition issues. Quercus offers this as a Binding Copy, in need of some repair or restoration. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Reprint. Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Reviews

On Oct 27 2020, a reader said:
I purchased this book at the Printers Row Litfest in 2019. This book, which was published in 1865, the last year of the Civil War, concerns a woman from Canada who fled to the U.S. to escape an arranged marriage and then enlisted in the Union Army, dressed as a man and using a male name as an alias. She got away with her deception and she actually took part in the fighting, as well as acting as an Army nurse (despite the fact that she had no training of any kind) and she also acted as a spy, dyeing her skin to look like an African American. I have read many books on the Civil War, including first person accounts, but I have never read another one like this. I recommend the book to anyone who likes to read about the Civil War.
