He was born in Bilbao, Spain, and studied philosophy and letters at the Central University of Madrid. Unamuno is best known for his philosophical works, which explore the themes of existentialism, faith, and the meaning of life. He was a strong critic of dogmatic and orthodox thinking and advocated for individual freedom of thought and expression. Unamuno was also a prolific writer of fiction, poetry, and essays. His most famous works of fiction include "Abel Sanchez," "San Manuel Bueno, Martyr," and "Niebla" (Fog), which is considered one of the most important works of Spanish literature of the 20th century. In addition to his literary and philosophical pursuits, Unamuno was also active in politics and social issues. He opposed the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera in the 1920s and was exiled to Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands for his outspoken criticisms. He returned to the mainland in 1930 and became involved in the Republican movement during the Spanish Civil War. Unamuno died in 1936 during the early months of the Spanish Civil War, shortly after he publicly denounced the excesses of both the Republican and Nationalist forces. His death remains a controversial and contested topic in Spanish history and culture."
