About This Item

London: Printed by W. Nicol, 1826.. First edition, 4to, (ii), 391, (1), xviii, (2) pp. Unopened in the original blue paper wrappers, spine with some loss and a modern paper label. A remarkable survival. Having collaborated with William Herschel two years earlier on a similar Phil. Trans. publication of 380 stars, South took his telescope to Paris for these measurements, 160 of which were new. It won him the Royal Society's Copley medal and secured his position as a founding member of the Royal Astronomical Society.
