About This Item
Hardback. Fair. T Durham, London, 1769, first edition; 8vo, pp xvi, 168; full calf, gilt spine, marbled end papers, one board detached and the other missing, spine badly rubbed and lacks label, internally firm and clean although with some light browning as usual throughout; early, probably first, owner's name (Ant. Highmore) in manuscript on the front end paper and with the note "from the Author" and the relevant name, perhaps in another hand, added later. Highmore is likely to be the painter and draughtsman, son of the portrait and historical painter Joseph and father to Anthony, the legal writer and abolitionist. John Hope (1739-1785) was the grandson of Charles Hope, first earl of Hopetoun, and became MP for Linlithgowshire in 1768 in succession to his father being, however, unseated a couple of years later, a fact he attributed to loss of patronage and to angering other members of the House on account of his support for John Wilkes, the radical journalist and MP who in 1776 was to introduce the first bill for parliamentary reform to the House of Commons.
