About This Item

Ocean to Ocean on Horseback, Captain Willard Glazier, 1896 - fully illustrated.

Captain Willard Glazier, author of "Capture, Prison-Pen and Escape" had always wanted to traverse the United States of coast to coast, which he began in April, 1876. He traveled for 200 days, astride his loyal horse "Paul Revere", lecturing, often sponsored by members of the GAR (Grand Army of the Republic), donating the proceeds of his lectures to various GAR posts and ultimately to the monuments of George Custer, who died shortly after he began his journey.

Captain Glazier had much to talk about, having served for three years led by Bayard, Stoneman, Pleasonton, Gregg, Custer, and Kilpatrick. He was then captured during a cavalry between Kilpatrick and Stuart in October, 1863 and was imprisoned successively at Richmond, Danville, Macon, Savannah, Charleston, and Columbia. He escaped from Columbia in November 1864 and was recaptured and escaped two more times before the end of the war.

His narrative includes fascinating early histories of Boston, Worcester, Springfield, Albany, Troy, Schenectady, Rochester, Buffalo, Cleveland, towns in Illinois and Ohio, Omaha, Cheyenne, Sacramento and more. He was even captured by Indians in Wyoming and ultimately escaped.

Enjoy this narrative in sections or from front to back, aided by the detailed Contents and illustrations list.

Condition as noted. Good cover, spine a bit faded. Interior very good.
