Rarest of Upson material, unnumbered 1/350cc, scarab bookplate of Margarethe Heisser who did the brilliant arts and crafts style lettering and illustrative decorating for each page plus three full page drawings, rare photograph of her on frp that is fading over time, spine woodsy-looking material reglued with five pieces of tape no joy to behold (needs rebinding perhaps?) and shows wear, silk boards, exquisite copy, bp of f/o on pastedown, printed by Hahn and Harmon of Minneapolis. Tragic story of this pair--Upson dying of illness, depression at loss of father and probably suicide at 31, likened to Keats by Sinclair Lewis who called him his poetic mentor; she died in mid 30s of rare illness; began drawing Indian women in nearby villages, attended Art Students League in NY, met him at a Minnesota University intellectual book club, she had very few showings, designed maybe four books at most. Special watermark rag paper, a splendid combination of turn of century printing, lettering, drawing and poetic display. Upson worked in Brooks' bookstore after class, even sleeping under the counters when unwilling to go home. This book is accompanied by Of Brooks & Books by Lee Edmonds Grove, a study of the publisher E. D. Brooks who is connected with the Upson book (see p70) for bibliographic citation, VG/VG, 1st edn, 489/1500cc.

Sewn binding. Signed, dated, and numbered by the artist. Lise Melhorn-Boe: "The text of 'Mending' is a poem by the American poet Hazel Hall. Hall was born in 1886, and lived for most of her life in Portland, Oregon. Following a bout of Scarlet Fever, at the age of 12, she was confined to a wheelchair. Hall took in sewing to help with the family finances, and 'Mending' is one of thirty-three poems she wrote about needlework. "The cover of each copy of the book is a pair of pants, or chorts, or, in one case, a short denim skirt. The first page is a collared shirt, the second a piece of household textile. Next follows a nightgown or pair of pyjama pants, and the last page is a T-shirt. Most of the garments came from friends and family.

Publisher's frail blue string-tied wrappers, 16mo, serial pagination 69-95 + [1] + 2 leaves of ads. This number featuring LYRICS AND SONNETS BY ARTHUR UPSON. Tiny blemish beside the "y" in "generally" on the upper wrapper (see photo 2 for our best attempt at a close-up). Old faint creasing near top corner of later pages. Also, written in pencil by a previous owner on the final page, is a column of rhyme scheme: ababbccb. This can be erased easily enough, but we leave it in case any new owner is a fan of contemporary marginalia. Finally, Mosher enthusiasts will be aware that surviving Bibelot single issues are fragile affairs, therefore we have stowed this copy safely now in a clear protective display sleeve with white card stock backing board. This fabulous poster was created especially for the featured author of Texas Writers Month in 2000 held in Austin, Texas by graphic designer Marc English. It is printed on heavy high quality coated stock in metalic inks: silver and bronze and laid over a duotone photograph of the rugged Big Bend country of West Texas. The poster quotes a long scene from McCarthy's BLOOD MERIDIAN with drops of bronze red blood for emphasis. This is a stunning visual and carries the impact of the original text depicting a scene of horror as the savages line up on horseback along the ridge their glass beads and painted bodies caught forever in the sun's hot glare as they anticipate the massacre that would follow. Only McCarthy could make this scene so vivid you might have to put the book down and never finish it.
