Mar del Plata has a rich history of chess tournaments, most notably their international chess tournament and open tournament. There is also an annual city tournament, which had its first edition in 1946, and reached its 62nd edition in 2007. The international tournament started off in 1928, but only in the period from 1941 to 1970 was it a truly international tournament with considerable reputation. After 1970, only seven international tournaments have been played. The 1951, 1954, 1969 and 2001 editions were zonal tournaments. There was also a zonal tournament for women in Mar del Plata, in 1969 won by the Brazilian Ruth Cardoso, Silvia Kot from Argentina came in second. In 1967 the first edition of the open tournament was organised; in 1969 it became an annual event.

The 1945 contest was won by Najdorf with a score of 11; second through third tied with Pilnik and Stahlberg with 10 1/2. Fourth through fifth was Julio Bolboch and Michel with 9 1/2. Sixth and seventh was captured by Luckis and Rosseto with 9, followed by Jacobo Bolboch in sole eight with 8. Ninth was Maderna with 7 1/2 followed by Pelikan with 7. Eleventh place was Iliesco with 6 1/2 and twelfth was Letelier with 6. In descending order was Hounie with 5 1/2, Guimard and Sanguinetti with 4 each and Giustina rounding our the field with 2 1/2.
