Includes large folding map of France that measures approximately 19 inches by 23 inches and is in very good condition with uniform foxing and two very short closed tears (less than an inch long) where connected to the book, no paper loss. Full sheep leather with in a sponged pattern, gilt lettered light brown spine label, gilt spine decoration, all edges tinted red, marbled endpapers, li, [2], 6-35, [1], 129 pages. Covers rubbed with chipping to the corners and overall scuffing, some separation to the top ends of the joints but covers secure, text block sound, name on title page and at top of the first calendar page, pages uniformly light foxed but clean.. Hard Cover. Fair. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.

Spine with gilt ruled lines, floral design and lettering. Front board with ruled panels and floral designs, all in gilt Single gilt ruled border to the rear board and board edges. Gilt inner dentelles. Marbled endpapers. All edges gilt. Armorial bookplate of noted author of books on folklore and topography, Sir George Laurence Gomme (1853 - 1916) on the front pastedown. Some offsetting to the endpapers from the leather turn-ins. A little rubbing to the extremities and the spine faded to an attractive brown but overall still a lovely copy of this scarce work in a fine quality binding. The binding is unsigned but is certainly the work of a master bookbinder.

I have only found 5 copies in libraries worldwide. Size: 4mo - over 9 3/4" - 12" tall. Text is in Italian. About 1/3 of the spine has been chipped away at the top, and the outer paper cover is gone from most of the rest of it. Both hinges are cracked about the same distance along the top of the spine. The author, Sébastien Le Prestre Vauban (1633-1707), is considered one of the greatest military engineers of all time. In this treatise he used statistical data to support his argument that all taxes should be repealed and replaced by a standard 10% tax on all agricultural output and on all income from trade and manufactures. Famed full-color frontispiece is intact, as is tipped-in protective tissue. All eight B&W engravings are intact, including frontispiece. (Plate on page 97 has a deckled bottom edge.)Spine is discolored and darker than rest of jacket, with slight wear on heel and top. Pages are age tanned and have small stains. Two of the pages are uncut.All four endpapers are significantly discolored with a black waxy substance (see photos), something like crayon.
