Tokyo: The Imperial Japanese Government Railways, 1914. Hardcover. Very Good. Stout 12mo. Pp. ix, [1], 2-488. Color frontis. illustration with printed tissue guard. With 25 maps, many folding. Laden with black-and-white photos, both in text and dedicated plates. Bibliography. Glossary. Index. Endpaper maps. Bound in cinnamon-colored cloth stamped with gilt lettering on the front cover and spine. Top edge gilt. Silk bookmark bound in. Very slight wear to covers, with endpaper maps age-toned. The first map, covering all of Japan, has a closed one-inch tear. Bookseller tag on rear pastedown ("State Book Shop, San Jose"). Errata slip is laid in. A Baedeker of sorts for Asia, but with greater detail and photos; the series was published in at least four volumes in successive years in the mid-1910s. The first covers Manchuria and Chosen, the second, Southwestern Japan, this volume, and the fourth Among the 40-plus itineraries offered in this volume is a route through the oft-contested Kurile Islands. One of the best-preserved copies we've seen.
