University of North Carolina Press, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Acceptable. This is a first edition and not a facsimile of the 1926 printing. Dark blue cloth boards. Gilt lettering on front board and on spine. Boards are faded and have stains on front. No dust jacket. Dented corner dented corner tips and at top and bottom of the spine. Deckled pages. Foxing on text block, more significantly at the bottom edge. Top of text block appears to have been gilt at one point, now darkened and foxed. Large foxing/stains on the front end papers and title page. All pages are fragile due to age, and are yellowed with browning on outer edges of the pages. Binding is in decent shape; pages remain intact and attached. Readable copy, although care is advised when reading. Pen and ink drawings by the author throughout. Black and white photograph of Cornelia Phillips Spencer on frontispiece. 325 pages.
