Light dust soiling, rubbing to extremities, internally sound and clean. Includes chapters on the use of books in early Irish monasteries, English monks and their books, libraries of the great abbeys, book making and collecting in the religious houses, cathedral and church libraries, academic libraries (Oxford, Cambridge), the use of books towards the end of the manuscript period, the book trade, and the character of medieval libraries and extent of circulation of books. Appendices discuss the prices of books and book-making materials, authors commonly found in medieval catalogues, and principal reference works on medieval books and libraries.
