As the boy grows, the father becomes caught in the demands of an adult world-meetings, conventions, and work. The father's dreams of shared activities with his son become the boy's solitary pursuits. Despite this, the book attempts to develop a happy ending, but it maintains a wistful, melancholy quality throughout. The detailed black-and-white illustrations by Wendy Wolsak enhance the text and depict the passage of time as the characters mature.
