About This Item
Heinemann, 1917. 1st edition. Hardcover. The pages and endpapers are very clean; the fore and bottom edges are untrimmed as issued; the grey paper boards are very good, although the spine is a little browned and the spine label is complete but a little frayed; the errata slip is present on the contents page. The fep bears the bookplate of Anthony Hobson, the distinguished bibliophile and collector. The first of Sassoon's great collections of anti-war verse, with 72 poems. The last poem to be included, at the last moment, was 'Blighters', one of Sassoon's best: ''I'd like to see a Tank come down the stalls,/Lurching to rag-time tunes, or 'Home, sweet Home',-/ And there'd be no more jokes in Music-halls/To mock the riddled corpses round Bapaume''. 740 copies published in London on 3rd May 1917 at five shillings.
