Portland, Maine: The Southworth-Anthoensen Press, 1945. First Edition . Hardcover. Near Fine. xii, 209 pp with index. Blue buckram, spine title gilt. One of 500 copies on laid paper. 10 plates, including frontispiece portrait of John Neptune. Eckstorm was a personal friend of the tribe, having worked with them with her fur trader father. John Neptune was the Governor and Hereditary Chief of the Penobscot Tribe as well as shaman to his people. Eckstorm, in this classic study, traces Neptune's life and his ancestors, discusses the history and politics of the Penobscot tribe and describes their spiritual beliefs. Near Fine, with publisher's prospectus laid in (with order slip clipped out) and original bill of sale ( for $5.50 postpaid ! ) from the Southworth-Anthoensen Press, dated October 8, 1945. The prospectus, also on rag paper, describes an edition of 600 copies (and "about 220 pages"). The book itself does not state the size of the edition; other sources indicate 500 were actually published.
