Everyman's Library #137, fiction series. --- In flatback binding style 1, full carmine cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, faded brown topstain. Lacks a dust jacket. --- About 1/4 inch of cloth is missing at head of spine, with crossed-through prior owner's inked information to front paste-down, with pencilings on perhaps as many as 12 leaves, partial split at front gutter and minor discoloration to covers; else a clean, firm copy.; 16mo (6 to 7 in. tall); xi, 454 pages .

Synopsis

Old Mortality is a novel by Sir Walter Scott set in the period 1679-89 in south west Scotland. It forms, along with The Black Dwarf, the 1st series of Scott's Tales of My Landlord. The two novels were published together in 1816. Old Mortality is considered one of Scott's best novels. It was originally titled The Tale of Old Mortality, but is generally shortened in most references.
