An attractive first edition/first printing in Fine condition, green cloth, red and green lettering, illustration in dark green on front and back boards, pictorial endpapers and dust-jacket, light foxing on verso with closed tear with minor tape repair to back panel, else Fine; Marcia Brown was awarded her second Caldecott Medal for the illustration in woodcuts in the retold fable from the Hitopadesa. With a lesson on humility and gratefulness, kindly hermit saves and protects a humble, frightened mouse from predators by magically changing the mouse into a cat, a dog, and finally into a handsome, royal tiger. The tiger's fatal flaw of pride causes the hermit to return the tiger back into a mouse who was never seen again; Woodcuts; Square 4to; [32] pages .
