Widely considered the author's masterpiece, One Hundred Years of Solitude is the English translation of Cien años de soledad, first published in Buenos Aires in 1967 by Editorial Sudamericana. The Pulitzer Prize winning novel tells the story of five generations of the Buendía family, beginning with patriarch José Arcadio Buendía and his wife Ursula Iguarán. Through the family history, García Márquez relates the history of the fictional Macondo people, founded by the Buendías. Despite their importance to Macondo, García Márquez makes clear that the Buendías interpret their land like they interpret themselves - in their own unique and esoteric way. Regardless, the Macondo represent the author's home country, Colombia, and the Buendías, his countrymen.
