New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. Yellow boards, black cloth backstrip, gilt-lettering on spine, blind-stamped title on front & unique design blind-stamped on front board and onto quarter-bound cloth, publisher's dark dye on top edges, xvii, 136pp including 6 original b&w block print illustrations. SIGNED, Inscribed & Dated by Author on upper area of front flyleaf: "To Jane Mallendorf (Mollendorf?), Sincerely, Langston Hughes April 15, 1949" and SIGNED by Illustrator, Jacob Lawrence, at lower left of same page. Generally a very attractive, clean copy; spine is moderately cocked with bright gilding & crisp ends, top corners lightly bumped, edges lightly faded, text crisp & clean, perhaps very lightly agetoned but still a nice soft creamy white. Dust jacket is printed on a non-glossy offwhite heavy paper with solid deep soft maroon front panel with pale green title lettering & white reverse author & illustrator lettering, pale green spine panel with maroon lettering, white back panel with maroon & pale green lettering. The spine & back panels show evidence of agetoning, the top edges show a bit of very light bumping & tiny chipping with a bit of light colorchipping at the spine top & top of folds; price is present on the front flap; over-all quite attractive and protected in a clear archival mylar cover which reveals no flaws on the backside. Both author and illustrator were (and remain) recognized as strong social influencers of their day through the expertise of their respective arts, having each received many, many professional accolades & awards. The publisher notes on the front flap, "Mr. Lawrence has caught with aptness and insight the very spirit of Langston Hughe's work. The result is a remarkable unity of text and design.". Signed by Author & Illustrator. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good Minus/Near Fine. Illus. by Jacob (Armstead) Lawrence (1917-2000). 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Binding very worn and rubbed, hinges weak, binding slightly warped, missing endpapers, pages 53-56 are torn, page 5 and 6 is torn in half in Harley’s A Discourse on Mistakes Concerning Religion, last page chipped and folded a bit, but with no material impact on text, internally somewhat, soiled, foxed and aged. Anthony Benezet (1713-1784) was born into a French Huguenot family that moved to London when he was two years old. At seventeen, his family moved to Philadelphia, and he became a Quaker. He became a teacher and established the first public school for girls in America, and along the way he managed to teach slave children from his home. In 1770, with the help of the Quakers, he set up the Negro School at Philadelphia, which he taught at until his death. The current work has the distinction of being one of the earliest and most important anti-slavery efforts printed in America… Read More

Description:
Letterpress broadside, 18 7/8" x 11 3/4", bold black type for highlighted words. Paper evenly toned, some wrinkling, considerable archival conservation and restoration with archival paper repair; despite the imperfections it is still a decent copy with a nice impression. This appears to fall into the political dirty tricks department in an election between John Brodhead and Henry Bumm for city treasurer in Philadelphia. The broadside is supposed to highlight a letter from John Brodhead to Jefferson Davis in 1860. It has strong racist overtones, as Brodhead supposedly requests a position in Nicaragua, so he can "help open it up to civilization and Niggers." He goes on to state he is "tired of being a white slave at the North, and long for a home in the sunny South." These kinds of political tricks were not uncommon during the Civil War period (perhaps that's still true today), and the racist overtones would certainly not help one's chances in a Northern election.

Louise Meriwether (born1923) is an African-American novelist, essayist, journalist and activist. Daddy Was a Number Runner is her critically acclaimed first book, and the first novel to come out of the Watts Writers' Workshop. Considered an underappreciated classic, it is her fictional account of a year in the life of a 12 year old girl growing up in Harlem during the Great Depression. "It risks offending people by taking up such issues such as police brutality, the unemployment situation, the desperation caused by the Depression and the different ways that the Blacks and whites are treated by society." (Ishmael Reed, The New York Times, June 18, 2021 "A Novel From ’70 Is Still Resonant"). Janet (Cheatham) Saxe (Bell) is an African-American educator, author and independent… Read More
