Pseud. of Reg Hill.] NFINE/FINE.No owner inscrptn but a small red felt-tip pen inked 'x' to top,right-hand corner of title page - remainder mark? - and no price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy, colour photographic front panel with orange+white lettering.similarly coloured lettering to a black spine/ backstrip, rear panel with white lettered novel's prose extract to a black background; all with negligible shelf-wear,bumping or creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present.Top edges very lightly, faintly and minimally dust-flecked but still bright,fore-edges bright and clean, almost blemish free; contents bright, tight, clean, solid and sound - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips - possibly unread other than my own collation.Publisher's bright, crisp,unblemished,sharp-cornered,original plain pale grey cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt-lettered spine/backstrip and immaculate plain white endpapers.UK,8vo HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-288pp [paginated] includes Pts 1-5 comprising 17,7,9,6 and 5 chapters respectively; plus [unpaginated] half-title+ title pages, and individual Pts separator pages.
Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional for a book of it's age,and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation. It is only the minor faults described that prevent a higher grading.Despite them,it really is still an exceptional copy for overall brightness and cleanliness.
Detective Inspector Dog Cicero investigates the disappearance of a little boy,a case that leads him back to his buried past in Northern Ireland, where he was scarred physically and emotionally by an IRA bomb. A child vanishes.Has he been kidnapped? Did he run away? Was he murdered? The child's mother comes originally from Londonderry,a fact which Detective Inspector Cicero cannot entirely ignore,if only because of his own experiences in Northern Ireland, experiences which have left all too visible traces across half his face. But just why is Superintendent Toby Tench leaving his devious Special Branch footprints all over Dog Cicero's Romchurch patch? And why does he want the courts to release Jane Maguire on bail after she has confessed to the murder of her little boy?
Tench plays his cards close to his chest, and Cicero soon finds out the odds are stacked against him both personally and professionally. But Dog's a gambling man,and when death's the only game in town a gambling man has got to play. 'The Only Game' is an intricate and compelling thriller by the author of 'Dream of Darkness' and 'Death of a Dormouse'.This original, unpredictable and powerful bnovel will delight his readers.
