Londini [London]: impensis Guil. Pickering, 1820. First edition thus. 48mo. (82 x 45 mm), pp. [2] 185 [1], including final errata and title-page, plus engraved frontispiece (author's portrait) and added engraved title-page, last verso with small portrait of Francis Bacon and motto 'Advancement of Learning', without the errata leaf. Frontispiece and engraved title-page dusty at margins, a little offsetting from frontispiece, a little yellowing. Contemporary polished calf, single gilt-ruled with blind pointille border, raised bands, spine tooled in blind, gilt-lettered morocco label, joints weakening but firm. Armorial bookplate of A. R. Malden to front pastedown, inscription 'A. R. Malden A.M. Aul: SS Trin: apud Cantab: D.D. Pater Henricus Malden Trin: Coll: apud Cantab: olim Socius' to ffep. 'Probably the second book published by Pickering' (Keynes), this first edition of Horace, exquisitely printed in diamond type by C. Corrall, became a bibliographical landmark as the first issue in the 'Diamond Classics', the series dedicated to George John, 2nd Earl Spencer (1758-1834), renowned bibliophile. Keynes, p.73.
